The Conceptual Design of a mission and flight system constitutes an end-to-end system design that includes user goals, mission requirements, cost goal, project schedule, system performance, quality assurance, system development schedule, launch, flight system commissioning, data acquisition and operations, up to data delivery to a secure repository for user use.
The Conceptual Design includes the process of trade-space analysis to meet multiple conflicting objectives in a most optimal fashion depending on key drivers, defined by the customer. These could include: low-cost, time to market, risk management, reliable operations, data latency and other often conflicting mission goals. The service would allow the customer to pick the best mission implementation architecture, given their mission specific objectives and constraints.
AstroLabs also offers technology (e.g. propulsion, communication, thermal) trade-space exploration studies. The objective of such a study is to inform the customer on applicability of various available, upcoming technology options and their impact on a particular mission concept and how best to meet mission goals.
Point Design Study:
AstroLabs offers its customers complete, end-to-end mission design and spacecraft flight system design studies in a more mature state of development. To allow for innovative and robust design solutions, state-of-the art mission design and flight system in-house design tools and those from JPL, various NASA centers and the Aerospace Corporation are used.
AstroLabs design methodology benefits from in house, on-call JPL expertise resulting in mission and spacecraft design concepts of the highest technical excellence. Model-based preliminary cost estimates can also be provided. The result of such a multi-day (and often multi-week) design study is a detailed mission study report accompanied by multiple presentations with high level summary of the design.
A more detailed costing study is also be offered as an option. AstroLabs also offers a detailed technology impact assessment studies for customers looking to develop mission critical technologies. Finally, AstroLabs also offers mission risk assessment and risk reduction studies. A preliminary risk mitigation plan can also be formulated to help customers in their early mission development cycle.
